Learned by ear: Grasse's know-how on UNESCO's list

Silver pomander opened into segments like a flower, a museum piece

Here's a thing. UNESCO's entry on the perfume skills of Pays de Grasse was inscribed in 2018 and covers three things, growing the plants, knowing and processing the raw materials, and composing the perfume, and it says the knowledge is passed on mostly informally, through a long learning process in the perfumeries themselves. That's how I learned every reel I know, at somebody's elbow in a pub in Spiddal, and nobody ever handed me a sheet. Some things only travel from one pair of hands to the next, like a tune.
