Chrysanthemums at the cemetery gates before All Saints

Cluster of glossy black blackcurrant berries under a leaf, against a soft green blur

When October gets cold, in Poland the stalls at every cemetery gate start to fill with chrysanthemums and candles for All Saints. Here in Berlin I found one stall near the Polish church and I stood with my nose in the pots. Bitter, green, a little like sage and wet earth. Not sweet at all. For me this is the smell of November.

Same bitter green as the pots on my neighbour's steps. I always thought they smelled of nothing until I put my nose right in.

Here's a thing. At home the graves get tidied before November and the whole road up to the churchyard smells of cut stems and wet stone and candle wax and nobody says a word about it. Like the hush before the last slow air of the night.

Yes, the smell is more in the leaves than in the flower.
