Scent diaryOur silver wattle is the mimosa perfumers mean
Okay, nerd moment: the silver wattle on our street has finished. A week of spring rain and the pompoms went from yellow to rusty brown.
Perfumers' mimosa is this tree, Acacia dealbata, from south-eastern Australia, and not anything in the genus Mimosa. The mimosa page has the whole story, including the old name, cassie.
I sniffed the last fresh sprays in the arvo: powdery, almond biscuit, honey on toast, and a little green right at the stem. Rant over.

Its on the weed list over here in NZ, the mimosa page says so too. Still smells sweet as on my walk to the ferry.

The gorse on our cliffs smells of coconut and now I'm wondering if it's the same sort of sweetness. Different plant, I know.

Different plant, but you've actually got me sniffing the wattle for coconut now.

The Class on Grasse and its flowers puts mimosa in its table next to rose, jasmine and tuberose [so your street tree has a career in France]. Definitely adding a sprig to my winter list.

Ours down here went over a few weeks back too. Now it's apple blossom on the stalls, a whole other kind of sweet.
