QuestionMy grandmother's sandalwood box smells of warm milk
My grandmother kept her incense in a small sandalwood box. I opened it this weekend for the first time in years and it smells soft, almost like warm milk, not like any wood I know. Is that what sandalwood is supposed to smell like?

Okay, nerd moment: 'milky' is actually how the sandalwood page puts it, soft, warm and creamy. Over here we have a different species, Santalum spicatum, which the Wikipedia article on sandalwood calls Australian sandalwood. Rant over.

We get the odd sandalwood box in the shop. The good ones still smell when you open the lid, even very old ones. Some turn out to be another wood stained dark, and those smell of nothing.

Hers does, faintly. I put it back with the lid on.

Aye, keep that wee box shut and it'll outlast us all.
