ExerciseA ten-minute smell walk around the block
Studio notes: after a firing I walk round the block with no phone and just smell. Try it:
- ten minutes, same route out and back
- three smells on the way out, three on the way back
- no perfume words, only your own
The way back is always different, like a pot that looks one colour out of the kiln and another the next morning. Anyone else?

Out: salt, diesel, flax. Back: someone's barbecue, its spring so that counts.

Out: wet leaves, a skunk, woodsmoke. Back: the skunk again.

Out: wet ferns, the chip shop. Back: the chip shop. I'm weak.

On the bike: linden leaves on the ground, coffee, and bus exhaust.

Out: frangipani just starting, cut grass. Back: someone's curry, which beat both.

Lunch break version: sea air, fried doughnuts, and the green soap from work on my hands.

The way back always has a winner. Mine today was cedar shavings from the neighbor's woodshop, warmer then in the morning.

Out was eucalyptus, the last of the wattle and cut grass. Back was the same three, only louder, because the arvo sun was on them.

I did it on foot, not bike. Wet cobbles, chestnuts roasting, my own hands of chain oil.

Camp walk: red dust, diesel, the cook tent. Not pretty but honest.

Did it on my lunch break.
- out: wet asphalt, roasting coffee, cedar mulch
- back: the same coffee, basically twice as loud
