Challenge

Describe pencil shavings without saying wood

Challenge from my classroom: I sharpened a whole pot of pencils for Monday, and the children have to describe the smell without saying wood or pencil. Best so far, from a seven-year-old: a new ruler that's been in the sun. Your turn.

A cold classroom with the window open, and somebody next door sawing a fence. Maybe that's the real answer: the cedarwood note says eastern red cedar's best sections were among the few woods good enough for pencils.

Moved this one over from Learning to Smell, it belongs in Everyday Smells. My answer: a closed pencil case on the first day of school.

Floor wax on a Monday before the kids come in. Close enough for me.
