Question

Why sheets off the line smell different

First time this spring the sheets have gone back on the line, and they come in smelling of wind and cold sea air. The dryer ones smell of the washing liquid and not much else. Why the difference?

Musk

I love the clean laundry smell so much I chase it in perfume. Is that the same thing as line-dried?

ingrid_berlin

Not the same. The clean laundry in a bottle is mostly musk: the musk note says synthetic musks smell clean, smooth and sweet, and get called white musk. The line gives you the weather. /Ingrid

So the dryer sheets smell of a bottle and the line ones smell of Hobart. I can live with that.

No idea what the sun does to a sheet, so I just log it.
- line: cold, airy, a bit grassy
- dryer: soft and sweet, the musk Ingrid means

Line-drying in Aberdeen is a gamble at this time of year. When it works the sheets smell of the harbour.
