Question

Boat shed cedar: the same tree as perfume?

Small brown western red cedar cones at the end of a scaly green spray

We plane a lot of cedar in the boat shed and it smells sweet and sharp, nothing like pencils. Is the cedar in perfume even the same tree?

Cedarwood

Often not. The cedarwood page says most cedarwood oil is distilled from junipers and cypresses, and only small amounts from true cedars like the Atlas cedar.

Ha. So half the cedar I know might not be cedar either.

My cedar chest is eastern red cedar, which the same page says is a juniper. Moths stay away from it, that part's true.

We kept cedar shoe trees in the samples room, would have been that same juniper I reckon.

Hinoki is the wood I grew up with, from my mother's bath. To me it sits right next to cedar.
