Treacle toffee and the bonfire on the rec

Red maple leaf resting on the white bark of a paper birch, with sharp shadows

Right then. The posters are up for the fireworks on the rec, and I've started smelling Bonfire Night before it's here: damp leaves, somebody's garden fire, the first wood burners going along the terraces. On the night it'll be woodsmoke, spent sparklers and treacle toffee from the church stall, that burnt sugar that sticks to your back teeth. When I was at the factory we went straight from the shift, so my bonfire always had a good hide in it too. I should have kept a notebook all those years. The club's page on birch tar, the smoky material behind leather accords is the nearest I've found to smoke and leather together.

Cheers, Ambrose

Bonfire Night is the one night a year nobody at home moans about the smoke on my coat.

Toffee apples at ours, and the dog under the table for the whole of the fireworks. Alot of sticky fingers.

We don't do Bonfire Night over here, the bonfires are at Halloween and half the estate smells of burning pallets and the fire brigade are giving out about it every year. Same smoke, different tune.

That's it in four words. I would of guessed Halloween was all pumpkins over there.
