TipAir the decorations box before it comes indoors
When the decorations come down from the loft, the box brings the loft with it: damp card, dust, a hint of mouse. I give it an afternoon open in the shed first, then wrap the glass baubles in fresh tissue with a cedar shaving or two. The shop does the same with anything that's been in storage.

Same at the school. The Christmas boxes in the basement smell of floor wax and cold concrete.

TL;DR: a few silica gel packets in the decorations tub. Basically no damp smell since. That's my two cents.

Doing this. Ours smelled of mouse last year and so did the tree, for a day.
