IntroductionArt history student in Exeter, starting from zero
Starting from zero. I can talk about a painting for ten minutes, but not about a smell. My gran's house smelled of roses and strong tea, and I'd love to be able to describe that properly one day.

Hello and welcome, first.sniff.
Zero is where every one of us started, so you're in good company. Roses and strong tea make a lovely pair to begin with: sniff a tea bag, then a rose petal, then the tea again, and note the words that turn up. There's a page on tea as a perfume note for when you want more.

A perfume-maker called Tapputi turns up on a Mesopotamian cuneiform tablet dated 1200 BCE, according to Wikipedia's history of perfume. [An art historian will definately appreciate a clay tablet.] The History, Bottles and Houses circle is where the old stuff lives.

A clay tablet, that's me hooked. Tea bag and rose petal tonight.

Welcome, first.sniff. My nan's house was roses and a pot of tea you could stand a spoon in, so you're not alone. There's a lot of us here who started with a gran.
