IntroductionAuckland boatbuilder wondering how perfume does the sea
I build boats in Auckland, so my days are kauri gum, varnish and spray off the harbour, not exactly floral. What I really want to know is how a perfume does the sea, because nothing I've smelled has got it right yet.

Isn't the sea smell in perfume made from whale vomit? I read that somewhere.

Not vomit. Wikipedia's entry on ambergris says it forms in the intestines of sperm whales, an estimated 1% of them, and that synthetic ambroxide has largely replaced it as a fixative. For the sea itself, the club actually has a page on calone and the marine side of perfume.
