QuestionFirst Christmas dinner at mine: which smell hits first?
I'm hosting Christmas dinner for the first time and I've started planning far too early. I want the flat to smell right when everyone walks in. Is it the roast, the gravy, the pudding? And do I light a scented candle or leave it?

onions in butter, every time. first thing anyone smells in a kitchen, even if you're roasting a whole bird

1) Plan the oven, not the candle. 2) If you like a timeline, there's a make-ahead Christmas menu for eight, planned over a seven-day countdown, and its turkey roasts with chestnuts, which would be my answer to your question. 3) Keep the pudding steaming in the kitchen as people arrive.

I'd leave the candle unlit on the table and let the kitchen do the work. If you do light one, the Class on what candles and incense do to indoor air has the airing habit to go with it. Shout if you get stuck.

Aye, roast potatoes. Nobody remembers the turkey, everybody remembers the tatties.

In my family the big dinner is Christmas Eve, and the house smells of the garlic prawns.

Onions on when the doorbell goes, then.

Sprouts. Whatever else you cook, the sprouts will announce themselves. I should have warned you sooner.

Morning all, ours was a gammon studded with cloves. Alot of cloves, and the whole house knew by Christmas Eve.
