QuestionFlat viewings when my coats smell of peat smoke
We're selling the flat and the first viewings are this weekend. My partner says it smells like a bothy, because of my coats in the hall and the smoky candles I like. I can't smell it at all. What would you do before people come round?

You'll no smell it yourself, you live in it. Get the coats out to the car or you'll loose the sale.

The shop gets judged on its smell the second the door opens, so I take this seriously. A home staging guide that ranks a bad smell as the first thing that loses a buyer covers it: tobacco, pets, damp and cooking are the ones it names, it advises against synthetic air freshener, and it keeps candles in the room unlit, for the cosy look without the scent.

So the smoky ones become ornaments. That hurts, but fine.

Callum, a clean house smells of very little and that's a lot easier on a stranger's nose than anything you add. Lovely news about the sale, fingers crossed.

When I sold my place in Devonport a mate walked in and said boat shed. I'd stopped noticing years before.

You live with the bass note, so you only hear the melody. A stranger at the door hears the bass first. /Ingrid

Coats went to my brother's, candles into a box, and my partner walked in from work and said it smells of nothing. I'm told that's the goal.
