QuestionLayering something lighter over birch tar
My birch scent is a running joke at home, and now my partner has asked if I could soften it for her sister's wedding. Can you layer something lighter over a smoky birch scent, or does it all turn to mud?

Put the quiet one underneath, not on top. A musk or a soft wood as the bass, then less birch over it.

It's like glazing, a thin coat over a dark clay body changes it more then a thick one hides it. I'd try cedar under the birch.

Pick a base that lasts. Iso E Super is made for that job, and Wikipedia's page on the molecule sold as Iso E Super calls it long-lasting on skin and fabric.

It's like finishing a peaty dram in a sherry cask, ken. Just don't loose the smoke entirely or you'll not be you.

Sandalwood under vetiver works for me, so I'd guess under birch too. The smoke stays, it just gets rounder edges.

Tried cedar underneath and one spray of birch instead of three. Her sister asked what the nice woody smell was. Result.
