QuestionLemon, bergamot and sunshine, my grandmother's rule
My grandmother in Porto always said: no lemon on your skin before the beach. Is it the same with bergamot?

Okay, nerd moment: for the pressed oils, your grandmother was actually onto something. The club's bergamot page, on its phototoxicity explains that expressed bergamot oil is phototoxic because it contains bergapten, a furocoumarin, and that IFRA caps it in finished products. The page on cold-pressed lemon oil says the same. Rant over.

And IFRA rules come in three kinds, a ban, a cap on the amount or a purity spec, as IFRA's own explainer on its standards sets out. Wee print, big difference.

Thank you all. I will tell my grandmother she was right, she will be impossible all week.
