Pouring candles in jam jars with my granddaughter

Nineteenth-century gilt bronze potpourri vase displayed against a red wall

Morning all, my granddaughter came for the weekend and we had a go at pouring candles into old jam jars. Melted plain wax smells of next to nothing, a bit like warm crayons, then the lavender candle scent went in and the whole kitchen changed in a second. Lovely.

Our trouble was the wicks. They kept slumping into the wax and we spent a lot of the afternoon holding them up with our fingers like a pair of sentries. Two of the three came out straight, one leans like the tower of Pisa.

Wax is a lot like glaze, it smells of nothing until the heat wakes it up. I'm rooting for the leaning one.

My mother poured candles into old teacups. I still have one, never lit, and it smells faintly of rose and dust.

Mum and I did beeswax ones when I was small. The honey smell as it melts is still the best part.

The warm crayon smell! I thought that was just me.
