QuestionWere old perfumes all natural before chemistry?
I always thought the old scents my mother wore were all flowers, nothing made in a lab. Is that right?

Not quite. The encyclopedia entry on Jicky says Guerlain released it in 1889, created by Aimé Guerlain, and that it was an early user of synthetic materials. Lab-made smells go back further than most of our mothers.

The vanillin article says Tiemann and Haarmann synthesised it from coniferin in 1874. Lab-made smells definately predate your mother's dressing table [mine too].

Well I never. I'll look at her powder a bit differently now.

I wear quiet synthetic musks since ten years. The Class on natural and synthetic materials is good on why natural does not mean better.
