QuestionWhy can't I smell my own house any more?
Mates walk in and say the house smells of varnish and kauri gum. I smell nothing. I was away up north on a job and when I came back I got it for about a minute, then it was gone again. What's going on?

That has a name: olfactory fatigue, also called noseblindness. A smell you live with fades out, and the sensitivity comes back once you leave. Like the hum in a studio you stop hearing.

TL;DR: the Class on scenting your home has a test for exactly this.
- smell your main room before you go out
- stay out at least half an hour
- smell it again from the doorway and note what stands out
It's basically a reset for your nose. That's my two cents.

Did it after the shed today. Varnish, wet towels and the dog's bed. Not proud of the last one.

Visitors say clay the second they walk in. I only catch it on my hands at night, stronger then anything in the room.

My husband can't smell the compost bucket. I can smell it from the porch. We are not the same.
