A garden rose next to a bottle of rose water

Close-up of a velvety red rose in the rose garden of Lalbagh, Bangalore

Last rose in the school garden and a bottle of rose water from the corner shop, side by side on the staffroom table. The rose is sharp, nearly lemony. The water is sweeter and flatter, like jam that's been on the heat too long.

The rose page says rose water is the by-product of distilling the petals, and that the heat changes some of the scent. Try it if you've still got a rose out.

The rose water on my shelf is the one everyone buys before Eid and weddings. Never once put it next to a real rose. Doing it tonight.

Did this with the rose bush by my classroom at break. The kids said the water smells like a bubble bath and the flower smells like "outside".

rose water is part of my mise for a pistachio cake. you're telling me it's the leftover water from making the oil?

Pretty much, going by the rose page. Leftover, but a lovely one.
