Question

My daughter is thirteen and wants a grown-up scent

My daughter is thirteen and has asked for 'a grown-up perfume' for Diwali. At weddings her older cousins wear something heavy with oud and rose, and that's what she wants. I'm not sure it suits a thirteen-year-old. Any thoughts?

I teach kids not much younger, and the ones who wear scent always want what the big ones wear. Mademoiselle Bulle's guide to gifts for a young woman has a section on choosing without asking her outright, which sounds like your situation.

Mo, two ideas: 1) let her smell rose with oud on one strip of paper and rose with tea or orange blossom on another, and see which she keeps going back to; 2) go small, a little bottle or a few minis, because her taste will move. The rose page, from otto to absolute shows her how many roses there are. Over to you.

The paper test is a good idea. She'll feel grown-up choosing it herself.

Morning all, at thirteen I wanted my nan's rose and powder and got a little bottle of rose water instead. I wore it like it was alot more than that. Lovely age. Mags x

Aye, let her choose. Folk that age ken fine what they like.

Let her pick on paper first.

My niece chose by elimination: three strips, cross one out each day.

That's the age exactly.

Three strips, then: rose with oud, rose with tea, and orange blossom on its own. I'll report back after Diwali.
