QuestionA first scent for my brother, who owns only deodorant
My little brother turns thirty soon and has never owned a bottle of anything, just the same deodorant since school. I'd love to give him his first proper scent. Where do you even start with someone who wears nothing?

Watch what he reaches for: his coffee, his tea, the jumper he lives in when it's dreich. That's your wee shortlist before any shop.

if your buying for a guy who owns zero bottles, smell his jacket. tells you more than he will

My brother was the same. A men's gift guide that looks past the usual blue scents points out that the fragrance families are the same for men and women, so you can start from what he likes rather than from a men's shelf.

He drinks black coffee all day and cycles everywhere, rain or not. His jacket smells of wet wool and coffee grounds. Does that point anywhere?

Coffee and rain sounds woody to me, maybe with black pepper on top. That's my kind of thing, anyway.

Aye, have a look at the woody family, from warm sandalwood to dry cedar and vetiver so you don't loose your way at the counter.

Woody with a bit of coffee, then. I've written three words on a card for the shop: coffee, pepper, wet wood. Samples first, bottle later.
