DiscoveryPumpkin guts smell more like cucumber than pie
Studio notes: the farm stand down the road has its pumpkins out, so I carved a test one on the wedging table. The inside smells nothing like pie. Raw pulp is cucumber and melon rind, wet and green, closer to fresh slip then to anything sweet. The seeds just smell of the stringy stuff around them. All the pumpkin smell I grew up with must be the spices. Anyone else?

The pumpkin spice we shake on lattes has no pumpkin in it at all. Cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, clove.

We carve one with the Year 4s every autumn. The classroom smells of wet pumpkin for two days, then of scorched lid once the tealight goes in.

Okay, nerd moment: if I remember my botany, pumpkins, cucumbers and melons are all cousins, so the rind smell adds up. Rant over.

Studio notes: so the pie I remember is a spice rack in a crust. The club's page on ginger and its citrus edge explains the bright bit I always noticed first. Anyone else?

TL;DR: raw flesh is cucumber, the stringy middle is melon, the skin is nothing. That's my two cents.

We carve on the porch, so for me it's cold air and pumpkin. Best night of the fall.
